Cantigas lute pic The earliest European picture of a lute, from the Cantigas de Santa Maria, an early book of pilgrim songs by Alfonso X ('el Sabio') of Spain in the 12th century. The instrument is clearly Arabic, and probably of Moorish manufacture.
If you know the painter or provenance of this one, please let me know. Looks like a pretty wild party, though...
